403 Comment in Newspaper - 'Sun Readers Say' Japanese "Hell-Ship" Blots Australia's Honor. We have allowed to happen one of the most diabolical acts that can stain our national character. To force hundreds of men, and, above all, women and children, to board an already overcrowded Japanese warship is one of the most heartless, and unchristian acts imaginable. 479 Death in Collision Found Accidental. The Coroner Mr.J.D Button S.M., yesterday found that Edward William Gambrill, 56, was killed accidentally on December 12 as the result of a collision at the intersection of Miller and Scrivener Streets, O'Connor. Mr.Button found that he died from the effects of gross injuries to the skull and brain. Anthony Winter, a student of Macleary Street, Turner said that about 1.45 on December 12 he was the driver of a 5 ton lorry when it was involved in a collision with a utility in Miller Street. Replying to Sgt.J.G Medwin, assisting the coroner, he said that on December 15 he had a conversation with Const. Upston about his driving license. He held an ordinary license at the time. Winter declined to answer whether on the date of the accident he held a license to drive a truck because it might incriminate him. He said that immediately prior to the collision he saw another vehicle approaching the intersection. It was the vehicle with which he subsequently collided. It was on his left and 20 to 25 yards from the intersection when he first saw it. He was travelling about 25 m.p.h He said he was carrying a full load of gravel but did not know the weight of the load. When he was a collision was likely he applied the brakes, which worked. Emmanuel Lanzon, labourer of Twentieth Street, Narrabundah, said that on December 12 he was employed by Grunberg and Donoghoe. About 1.45pm he was a passenger in a utility driven by Gambrill. They were driving along Miller Street towards Civic Centre and coming to the intersection of Scrivener Street at about 30 m.p.h As they neared the intersection they could see a truck coming from the right. They saw it for about two seconds then there was a bang. Lanzon thought Gambrill tried to swerve. Lanzon tried to save his face under the dashboard. He remembered being thrown around. The vehicle then crashed into a post. After that Lanzon looked in the cabin for Gambrill but he was not there. Gambrill was lying on his back near a telegraph pole. William Frederick Hamilton Crick, medical practitioner gave evidence of carrying out a post mortem on Gambrill's body. Const C.J. Upston said that about 1.50pm on the December 12, with Const. Kennedy he arrived at the scene of the collision. He saw a utility facing north which had mounted a kerb on the south-eastern corner of the intersection. The vehicle had uprooted a street sign at the corner and then had struck an electricity pole. The apparent force of impact of the vehicle had smashed in the offside in the immediate area of the driver's door and had forced the footboard and cabin floor in and the turret upwards. GAMBRILL, Edward William (I368)
