Dover Diamond Wedding. Mr. and Mrs. William Laws who celebrate their diamond wedding anniversery to-day (friday), have lived at 36 Oswald Rd, the whole of their sixty married years. They were the first couple to be married at the Memorial Hall, a free Church, just built in 1886 which stood in Priory Rd, on the site now used by the general Post Office as a grarage. When they setup their home at 36, Oswald Rd, the house was still in the hands of the builders. Mr.Laws, now 84 years of age came from Swingfield, where he was born, to Dover when he was seven years old. Apprenticed to Messrs. Coulthard and Wilson\'s as a cobbler, he afterwards worked for the late Mr.J.R.Geddes for more than twenty years and when that business which was in Briggin St, was closed down, he continued boot repairing at home and also worked in a small market gardeners business. Keenly interested in political matters in his younger days, he was a pioneer of Dover Liberal Association when it was formed in 1881. Mrs. Laws, formerly Miss Elizabeth Gambrill, is 85 and has lived in Dover the whole of her life. Three of their four children, all daughters, are living and there are nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. *Dover Express newspaper (need to followup on date) |
