Overseas Visitors "Mostly". Fifteen years in Launceston's Queen Victoria Museum have taught curator Albert Gambrill that "oversea visitors appreciate museums most." Mr.Gambrill in his 73rd year - retired yesterday. He received barometer from the staff. His years in the institution have made him something of an institution himself. He said attendance from year to year varied from 53,000 to 57,000. Queen Victoria as a provincial museum is unparalleled in Australia, Mr. Gambrill says. He remembers that when he joined it, a new section had just been taken over from the Junior Technical School. Every naval man in Launceston knows him. He is a foundation member and life member of the Ex-Navalmen's association, as becomes one who joined the R.N in 1897. He rose to gunnery instructor, then chief petty officer, and transferred to the R.A.N, before the First World War. Mr. Gambrill's career covered 50 ships - at sea and "ashore". |
