  	Joan Mitchell's. Women's World. Honoring couple's diamond wedding. A MOUNT Pritchard couple reached their diamond milestone last week after walking through 60 years of marriage together. Leslie and Sarah Jane Gambrill were married at St Sambas Church, Broadway, Sydney on October 9, 1920. Last week, they quietly celebrated their diamond wedding, enjoying the love and respect of their four daughters two sons, 12 grand-children and 19 great-grand-children. Mr.Gambrill was born at Merrylands in 1900, his wife at Glenn Innes in 1901. They have lived at Mount Pritchard for 20 years. Mr Gambrill retired from the railways in 1964; unfortunately he at a fall recently and is at present recovering at the Canley Vale Nursing Home. But his wife is there with him, and when I visited them last week, they were hoping to be home in time for their anniversary. When Mr Gambrill became plate-layer in 1919, Australia was opening up on the backs of the men who were laying iron lines of communication across the wilderness. The work, and the conditions were hard, and rough. "But I was glad to have a steady job," said Mr Gambrill. "I worked the length and breadth of NSW in my time. We lived on the job, we slept in tents, cooked for ourselves the best way we could, and washed our clothes if there was enough water; that was all the railway supplied us with, wood and water." He continued, "We had to keep our heads down and keep working no matter how hot or cold the weather; there was no slacking; believe me, those old gangers were hard men, and tough." "But it was harder still on Sarah Jane,", said Mr Gambrill. "She had to bring up the children practically single handed, but she did a great job, they all turned out well." "Wages," said Mr.Gambrill, "were seven pounds twelve shillings a fortnight ($15.20); not much keep mother and me and six kids on, but we managed. "I got by with as little as I could and sent the rest home." "I just did what had to be done," said Sarah Jane. "Yes,"said her husband. "she's one in a million. She doesnt smoke, or drink. "But," he added with a sly dig, "she certainly does snore!" Then that makes two of us," said Sarah Jane. Unknown Newspaper.
