  	DASH IN VAIN TO SAVE SWIMMER. SYDNEY, Saturday, After a quarter mile dash along the beach a Marist Brothers trainee swam 200 yards through heavy surf in a vain attempt to rescue a drowning youth at Avalon today. The youth, a University student was Donald Muston, 18, of Norwood Avenue, Linfield. He was seen to be in difficulties and LAC George Gambrill, RAAF, swam out and supported him while others attracted the attention of trainees from the Marist Brothers Training College, at Toongabbie. The trainees, who were practising with reel and line for life saving examination, carried the reel a quarter of a mile. John Glynn, one of the trainees, donned the belt and swam to Muston, who was unconscious when brought in. Muston failed to respond after an hour's treatment in an iron lung.

Mr. Gambrill hails from a long line of bakers, his grandfather owning the Gambrill Bakery in Granville, and his father a similar business in Campsie, where his son served his time at the trade.
