BELMONT BEFORE MR. H.T.D.SEE, S.M. FINED £18. Robert Gambrill. 28, carrier, was fined £15 for having driven a semi-trailer truck while under the influence of liquor on the Pacific Highway, Belmont, on February 20. He was also fined £3 for having failed to stop after an accident. On a charge of negligent driving he was remanded till June 8. Gambrill pleaded "Guilty" to the first two charges. Police said he had been intercepted at Belmont. Gambrill had said he did not think he had been involved in an accident. He told Sergeant Timmins he had been drinking at Swansea and Belmont, and that he thought he was in Maitland or Cessnock. Mr.See: No wonder there is a high accident rate when this kind of thing goes on. Mr. A.B.James appeared for Gambrill.

Can Only Drink on Festive Occasions. Giving a man, who appealed against the severity of a penalty for driving under the influence of liquor, a bond in Newcastle Quarter Sessions to day, Judge O'Sullivan made an unusual condition. He told the appellant, Robert Gambrill (28), a carrier, that he must abstain from drinking during the period of the bond?except on festive occasions. This would enable Gambrill to have a drink at times like Christmas, but during week days when driving his truck he would have to abstain. Gambrill, who lives at Morisset, was slumped in the driver's seat of his truck when stopped by police following an accident, the Crown Prosecutor (Mr. R. L. G. Brereton) said. When questioned he admitted that he did not know whether he was at Maitland or Cessnock, but he did have some recollection of hitting an other vehicle. After some evidence had been given as to Gambrill's character, Judge O'Sullivan said he felt Gambrill was the type of man to honor a bond. He formally dismissed the appeal, but without entering into conviction ordered Gambrill into a £100 bond to be of good behavior for three years with the conditions.

DISCHARGED ON BOND, Robert Gambrill. 28, carrier, of Newcastle-street. Morisset, appealed against the severity of penalty on charge of having driven a motor vehicle at Pacific Highway, Belmont while under the influence of Intoxicating liquor. Mr. J.Braun instructed by Messrs. James and Grahame, appeared for Gambrill. Mr.Brereton said that when arrested Gambrill told the police he did not know whether he was at Maitland or Cessnock and had no idea how much liquor he had. He also said he had no recollection of having struck a vehicle on the side of the road. Gambrill said he had nothing to eat between an early breakfast and 3 p.m. He had previously driven taxi-cab. He was buying a semi trailer. The Judge said that because Gambrill was inclined to make his way in life, he was satisfied he would honor a bond. His Honor dismissed the appeal, but under section 556a of the Crimes Act discharged Gambrill on a bond of £100 to be of good behavior for three years, and ordered that he abstain from intoxicating liquor for the period of the bond, except on festive occasions, such as Christmas.
