WINDSOR.[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] DEATH FROM DROWNING. A very sad case of drowning happened here on Monday afternoon last, the victim being a little boy, six years old, named Francis Tont, who had been playing on the banks of the river with other children. He was the only son of Robert John Tont, painter of this town. An inquest was held at the residence of the child's parents, this morning (Tuesday) William Charles Gambrill stated:? I am a shopman in the employ of Mr. Dean, linen draper. About 6 o'clock yesterday evening, I heard that Francis Tont, son of John Tont, had fallen into the river at Beazley's wharf, and was drowning. I immediately ran down to the water, and was shewn the spot where deceased had fallen in. I stripped myself as speedily as possible of part of my clothing, and went in to search for the body. I found it about nine feet under water in amongst some weeds, and about four yards from the bank. When I brought the body to the shore it appeared quite dead; it must have been in the water about a quarter of an hour. I saw many grown up persons on the bank and some children; children assemble on the bank to play; the edge of the water cannot be seen from the road. Robert John Tont stated : I am a painter and live in Fitzgerald-street, Windsor. The deceased is my son, six years and three months old : I was at home at 6 o'clock, yesterday evening, about the time of his being drowned ; when I heard of the accident I ran to the place and found that the body had been recovered ; I recognize the remains as that of my son Francis Tont ; it was usual to send him to school in the afternoon, but he was cautioned never to go or come home by the banks of the river.
Dr. Day handed in the following statement to the jury :- "Yesterday afternoon I was requested to visit the late Francis Tont, who had been recovered from the water, into which he had fallen. I found him quite dead; and from the appearances of the body, believe that he must have been submerged for at least a quarter of an hour. I used every means to restore vitality by artificial respiration and by infrication, but the means were of no avail. Death resulted from asphyxia by drowning. "The jury found" That the deceased was accidentally drowned in the river Hawkesbury on Monday evening last to which was added the following rider, " We desire to record our sense of the praiseworthy conduct of Charles Gambrill, who so promptly dived into the river to rescue the body." |

- Death of Mr. W. C. Gambrill - Great sorrow was expressed in the district, and particularly in Windsor, on Wednesday morning, when news was received of Mr. W.C.Gambrill's death in Sydney. It was known that deceased had been in a very precarious state of health for some considerable time past, but the news of his death came as a shock to every one. Mr. Gambrill was very much respected throughout this district, where he was well-known. He was associated with the Hawkesbury for a great number of years, and was well-known along the river, being one of the first regular traders upon it. Some time ago he started business in Windsor, but subsequently, being compelled to relinquish it through ill-health, went to reside at Willoughby. Mr.Gambrill was a prominent member of the Wesleyan body during bis residence in Windsor, and was greatly missed when he left the town. The deceased gentleman was only 46 years of age. [29]
- The Late Mr. W. G. Gambrill - A. correspondent writes:-We are sorry to record the death of the late Mr. W. C.Gambrill, who died at the residence of Mr. C.G.Johnson, at Redfern, on Tuesday evening last. Mr.Gambrill has been a great sufferer from pulmanary phthisis for many months, and had on that account, been compelled to surrender what would have proved a lucrative business at Willoughby, North Sydney. The funeral took place on Thursday, the place of interment being at Rookwood, in the Wesleyan cemetery there. Quite a number of relatives and friends attended, for the deceased was widely known and much respected. Among those clustered round the grave were two well known faces from Windsor and Richmond, who had attended to pay the last tribute of esteem to one whose sterling worth they knew so well. In Mr. Gambrill's death, the Wesleyan Church loses a zealous member and an indefatigable worker. From boyhood, as scholar, teacher, treasurer, choir-master and local preacher, the late Mr, Gambrill occupied a prominent position in the Wesleyan community of Windsor from whom, but a short while ago he was the recipient of an illuminate address.
There is no death! What seems so is transition.
This life of moral breath
Is bat a suburb of the life elysian, Whose portal we call death. [30]
