PRESENTATION AT AUBURN TO A WINDSOR WOMAN. From the "Auburn News" we learn that Mrs. W. C. Gambrill received numerous gifts, presentations and addresses from the local Methodist Church and Sunday School on her leaving the district after a twelve years connection with both, during which time she has been a most enthusiastic and devoted worker in all that relates to church and school matters. The superintendent and teachers acknowledged Mrs. Gambrills good work by presenting her with a very handsome timepiece, suitably inscribed on a silver plate; and the scholars gave her a very nicely bound copy of the new Methodist Hymn book together with a serviceable handbag and a very feeling address, which no doubt, Mrs. Gambrill will prize dearly. There are many in Windsor who knew Mrs. Gambrill in years gone by, both as Janet Melville, Sunday school scholar and the wife of the late Mr. W. C. Gambrill ("Charley") who was also a most energetic church worker, local preacher and Sunday school teacher. Old timers will remember "Charley" being at Dean's and "Charley" Parnell's, and later on, keeping a grocer's shop at the corner of George and New Streets. He died some years ago at Redfern, after a long and painful illness and was interred in the Wesleyan cemetery, Necropolis, Rookwood. Mrs. Gambrill is the fifth daughter of the late James Melville of "Woodside" and is a native of Windsor. She is now residing at Summer Hill, which, it seems, is a favorite camping ground of Windsorites, for there we find name of the Mortleys mad Johnsons, also Primrose. |

Auburn is losing for a time, an old resident in the person of Mrs. Gambrill, who for the past 12 years has been an enthusiastic worker in the local Methodist church and Sunday school. The departure is made for the purpose of recruting her health. At the annual meeting of that Sunday School last Wednesday occasion was taken to acknowledge her work by presenting her with a handsome timepiece suitably inscribed as the gift of the superintendent and teachers. Her scholars also made a presentation in the form of a serviceable handbag and a copy of the new Methodist Hymn Book. Both mark, were accompanied with touching letters, hopes being expressed that ere long she would return, fully re-stored, to take up those duties she had so faithfully discharged.

Obituary |
11 Nov 1927 [11] |
MRS. JANET GAMBRILL. There passed away on Monday last at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Jones of Lower Portland, an old and respected native of the Hawkesbury district in the person of Mrs. Janet Gambrill. The deceased, who had not been enjoying good health for the past three months came to Lower Portland about three weeks ago to spend a holiday with her daughter. She took seriously ill, however, and gradually became worse until she passed peacefully away on Monday afternoon. The late Mrs. Gambrill was born in Windor 69 years ago and was a daughter of the late James and Mary Melville. In her early twenties she married William Charles Gambrill, and they conducted a general store Windsor over 30 years ago. Her husband died in 1893, and the late Mrs. Gambrill was left to rear a young family of three sons and two daughters, of whom she was justly proud. The family comprises Ethel (Cremorne), Annie (Mrs. G. Jones, Lower Portland), Arthur, Wes. (Lower Portland) and Walter (in the Railway Department at Albury), Mrs. B. E. Sullivan (Richmond) is a sister and Mr. John Melville (Penrith) a brother. Of a generous and good hearted disposition, the late Mrs. Gambrill had many friends throughout the Hawkesbury district. She was ever ready to assist any good cause that needed a helping hand and all who ever called at the home of the old lady were invariably treated most hospitably and kindly. She was a worthy pioneer and the State is the richer for having known her. With true understanding born of personal knowledge of the difficulties met with in life, particularly the settlers on the land the deceased lady was everyone's friend. So it was that a large gathering of Hawkesbury folk journeyed to Rookwood cemetery on Wednesday to pay their last respects to her memory when her mortal remains were reverently laid beside those of her late husband. The motor funeral was conducted by Mr. Chandler, of Windsor and Rev. W. Deane (Methodist) of Epping officiated at the graveside. |
