BACK TO SCHOOL
ADDRESS BY A LADY OVER 82 YEARS BIG GATHERING OF EX-PUPIL'S
To be able to publicly address a large gathering at the age of 82 years and six months was the privilege of Mrs O'Kelly, who was as Miss Collins in charge of the '' Infants' Department of Windsor 'Superior Public School for many years, at the Back to School function last week. 'I am quite deaf,' said Mrs. O'Kelly, "but I am glad to be able to tell you of the thrill I experienced on awakening this morning to reflect that I was going back to the school where I worked for many years and from which I had been absent for 23 years. It is indeed pleasing to see the dear old place repeopled with the old familiar faces of my pupils of long ago. One of them has told me that she has grandchildren. I am still a student for I believe we are never too old to learn, but now I am learning from people younger than myself. I am still devoted to children and would like to live my life over again so that I might teach them better and love them better. May I wish you all happiness in this life and joy in the life beyond" Continued applause marked the conclusion of Mrs.O'Kelly's address and the kindly spoken old mistress was handed a beautiful bouquet of sweet peas by Mrs. J.T.Tebbutt, one of her infant pupils of years ago. AN INTERLUDE A humorous interlude was provided by the intrusion of Albie Ford who, neglecting to take off his hat, had it promptly removed by the teacher, who despite Albert's protests, 'Please, Mr.Anderson, my mother sent along a note yesterday morning to say I'd be late this morning,' was soundly caned in the prevailing fashion of 50 years ago. It was a clever piece of amateur acting which put everyone in good humor. Other speakers included Messrs. Edmund and Marshall McMahon, Malcolm Greenwell the Mayor (Ald Jenkyn), and a vote of thanks to Mr. Carne (headmaster), was carried by acclamation. A large number of apologies were received.
CALLING THE ROLL- Appended are the names of old scholars written by their own hands in a roll specially prepared by the headmaster, Mr.Carne. It should form an interesting reminder of 'Back to Windsor' Week in years to come, and should take pride of place in the official records of the town and district:
